Workshops

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) conducts several workshops throughout the year. These workshops provide extended knowledge about MEPS data, practical information about usage of MEPS public use data files and an opportunity to construct analytic files with the assistance of AHRQ staff. The workshops are designed for health services researchers who have a background or interest in using national health surveys. A registration is required to attend MEPS workshops. These webinars consist of a variety of MEPS topics designed for individuals interested in doing research using MEPS data. A registration is required to attend MEPS webinars. Upcoming Two Webinars on Tuesday, January 24th and Tuesday, January 31st, 2023: Linking MEPS Conditions Data.

Both webinars will consist of a combination of lecture and hands-on to provide knowledge that researchers need to link the MEPS-HC Medical Conditions public use data files to the Prescribed Medicines public use data files and to the medical events public use data files. Each webinar will be 90 minutes in duration. A Q&A session is planned at the end of the session to give participants an opportunity to ask questions pertaining to their specific research.


Webinar #1: Using R to Link MEPS-HC Medical Conditions to Prescribed Medicines

Tuesday, January 24th, 2023 @ 11:30 am (ET)

Presenter: Rebecca Ahrnsbrak

This webinar will cover an applied example of how to link the MEPS-HC Medical Conditions public use data file to the Prescribed Medicines public use data file using R. The example will cover loading MEPS data into R, merging data sets, and using survey procedures to estimate prescribed medicine utilization and expenditures for the treatment of hyperlipidemia among the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population in 2020. Basic familiarity with MEPS-HC and R (version 4.0.4 or later) is recommended.

Webinar #2: Using SAS to Link MEPS-HC Medical Conditions to Medical Events

Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 @ 11:30 am (ET)

Presenter: Emily Mitchell, PhD

This webinar will cover an applied example of how to link the MEPS-HC Medical Conditions public use data file to the Medical Events public use data files using SAS. The example will cover loading MEPS data into SAS, merging data sets, and using survey procedures to estimate utilization and expenditures related to mental health treatment among the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population in 2020. Basic familiarity with MEPS-HC and SAS (version 9.4) is recommended.
