   Diabetes is a disease characterized by high levels of blood glucose (sugar). Diabetes results when the body does not produce enough insulin, when it is resistant to the insulin produced, or both. A total of $40.8 billion was spent on treatment for diabetes in 2007, compared to $18.5 billion in 1996 (in 2007 dollars).
